چکیده
The respiratory status of residents of three areas exposed to (1) photochemical oxidants (Burbank, Calif), (2) sulfur dioxide, parliculates, and hydrocarbons (Long Beach, Calif), and (3) low levels of pollutants (Lancaster, Calif) was determined using a modified National Heart and Lung Institute questionnaire, electronic volume spirometric studies, the single-breath nitrogen washout test, and body pletbysmographic studies. Each area under study was within 2 km of a monitoring station of the Southern California Air Quality Management District. Seventy to 79 percent of the residents of enumerated households completed testing. Results of retesting a 3 percent probabifity sample at the Pulmonary Function Laboratory of the University of California, Los Angeles, indicated reasonable repeatability for all tests except the single-breath nitrogen test. Among the three areas, participants from Lancaster, Calif (low pollution), had the greatest number of “best” performance values and the least number of “worst” performance values for

Overlap Syndrome in Respiratory Medicine: Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are highly prevalent chronic diseases in the general population. Both are characterized by similar mechanisms: airway inflammation, airway obstruction, and airway hyperresponsiveness. However, the distinction between the two obstructive diseases is not always clear. Multiple epidemiological studies demonstrate that in elderly people with o...
متن کاملAir pollution and hospital admission in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Tehran, Iran
Objective: There are many communities at risk by a series of air pollution episodes. Tehran is one of the most polluted cities in the world. The presence of one or more air pollutants with a certain concentration in a particular period of time can cause several adverse effects on human and animals’ well-being that can cause much morbidity. There are several pollutants in the ai...
متن کاملAssociation of Health Effects of Air Pollution on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Background & Aims of the Study: Lung is directly exposed to surrounding air and existing pollutants to perform its natural task. In this paper, COPD cases attributed to NO2, O3, and SO2 were studied based on assessed data in Ahvaz city of Iran during 2014-2015. Materials and Methods: Data were processed by Excel through steps including temperature and pressure correction, progra...
متن کاملرابطه آلودگی هوا بر مرگ و میر ناشی از ابتلا به بیماری های مزمن ریوی و انسداد ریه (COPD) در شهر مشهد
Background and purpose: Air pollution causes respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In this study we aimed at statistical modeling of the effects of air pollution on mortality due to chronic pulmonary disease and COPD in Mashhad, Iran, using negative binomial regression. Materials and methods: Mortality data due to chronic pulmonary diseases and the average ...
متن کامل[Air pollution and lung diseases in adults].
Short-time exposure to air pollutants and in particular to sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and photochemical oxidants may cause respiratory symptoms similar to acute bronchial asthma. In healthy adults however the concentrations required to evoke significant bronchial obstruction lie still above the level of atmospheric air pollution usually observed in our country. In contrast patients with pr...
